The Million Pound Mission is a 12-month campaign, launched to raise £1 million, to build a second hydrotherapy pool at the Alan Shearer Centre, helping more families access vital therapy and specialist support.
17th April 2026 marks the start of the Million Pound Mission and 20 years since Alan Shearer’s final professional game, when he scored his record-breaking 260th Premier League goal.
That moment was part of a journey that began with his testimonial and continues today through the work of the Foundation, supporting families across the North East.

The Challenge We’re Facing
For 20 years, the Foundation has supported thousands of families through the Alan Shearer Centre by providing a safe, inclusive space where children and adults with complex disabilities can access specialist care, therapies and social opportunities, completely free of charge.
Over the past 12 months, demand for the Centre has increased significantly, with memberships growing to 10,000.
This increase reflects a growing national pressure, with reports showing more families seeking additional support for specialist services.
As a result, the Centre’s hydrotherapy pool is now oversubscribed, leaving many families waiting longer or unable to access consistent sessions that can make a real difference to their physical health and wellbeing.
What the Million Pound Mission Will Do
The Million Pound Mission will fund the build of a second hydrotherapy pool at the Alan Shearer Centre.
The hydrotherapy pool is one of the most important facilities at the Centre. For many members, these sessions are an essential part of their physical health and mental wellbeing.
By building a second pool, the Foundation will be able to:
- Increase capacity for hydrotherapy sessions
- Reduce waiting times
- Provide more consistent access to essential therapy
- Support more children and adults across the region
- Future-proof the Centre’s services to meet growing demand
